CALLING ALL RADIO HAMS
Society Opens Its Doors to Public
HAVE you ever wanted to know just what goes on in the world of the radio ham?
Tony Hancock opened up the air waves to a wider audience of course but devoted
radio amateurs would not thank us for saying so. On Sunday, Medway Amateur
Receiving and Transmitting Society will open its doors to the public in the
grounds of the Cats Protection League HQ, Matts Hill, near Bredhurst. MARTS, as
the group is known, is actually older than the BBC. It suffered a sad loss
recently with the death of its president, Bill Nutton - call sign G6NU -
affectionately known throughout the amateur radio world as Uncle. His death
prompted a letter from Prince Philip who is the radio amateurs' patron. At the
open day which starts at 11am, there will be various pieces of equipment and
operators to explain how it all works, plus members of the RAYNET organisation
who help out the county authorities in times of emergency. The Home Office has
issued a series of special
cards for the day which will be sent out to radio amateurs who make calls to the
special open day station and in years to come the cards, marked with a special
City emblem, will be collectors' items. Extracted Kent Evening Post Friday
