I have been a little disappointed in the amount of information I have received for this Newsletter, I am indebted to Dr Colin for reports of his previous talks to the Society, and the contribution from Brian’s wife Patricia who submitted, Rescued, The Crystal Set, Some Clubs. And Jim Nolan.

The M.A.R.T.S. Picnic.
2.P.M. Sunday September 22nd 2002. Dr Colin, G0POS.
Will it----? Won’t it-----? But, ‘the rain fell mainly in the plane’(1), there were squalls in the distant, and several couples & Little John, G6IVP, collected and braved the uncertain weather to meet at Blue Bell (2) picnic centre, with that beautiful view to the horizon (3) across the plane of the Medway river.
Although a Japanese Morse Expert in WWII, John, G3FTH, operated on Phone on USB 7MHz using the Club Call-sign, G5MW, and logged many home and European stations in 1 1/2 hours. Using an Alnico Tx/Rx from the boot of his car and 50-100 W and an ’Outbacker’ type aerial and using the roof of his car as a ground-plane, which gave an excellent VSWR.
Meanwhile, most of the rest of us were ’at it’! Sandwiches, sausage-rolls, chocolate, tea, coffee, coacoa and even a drop of ’owes yer father’ for any who wished it: (’to keep the circulation going of course’), and then THE SUN CAME OUT!! Beautiful sky and majestic white clouds, say 5/10ths sky (or more modernly accurate 4 Octas!). It actually felt warm. The occasional small private aircraft buzzed away in the distant and the view was magnificent: 20 miles +?(3). A merry chat took place apart from the indigestion of such rich food so soon after lunch!
As the time passed, basking in the sun, we were all loathed to leave the sunny spot and the company, which the event had provided. We all declared:" We must all do it again”.
Notes: (1) Lerner & Lowe, ’My Fair Lady’
(2) Not a site for Kite enthusiasts due to downdraughts and airdrome near.
(3) Distance to the Horizon, flat surfaces, miles, is = 1.41 x h h = height in ft.
Other outings The Chalk-Pits open air museum @ Amberley with old Buses, traction engines well digging, tree-felling and saw mills, a large Power Station and all working.
Use of the HF Tx & beam aerial, with permission. Great for Dads and offspring's!
Meanwhile SHOPPING FOR THE XYL’s in nearby Arundel or a shufti @ the castle!? Any Takers? Next Spring?

Sir Oliver Lodge, Britain’s Marconi?.
Friday 4th October 2002. Dr Colin G0POS.
Something for everyone here it seemed. The audience consisted of several Ladies, there were quite a few guests here to hear a talk of the sort ‘Compared & Contrast’ these two gentlemen. Also we were pleased to see Stan, G8ZLK, 93 and wheel-chaired, and bright, our longest serving M.A.R.T.S. member, who told me he had “come especially” -- you old spoofer Stan.
There were many contrasts in the talk e.g. ‘our Oliver’ was one of 9: a steady, hard working family in the ‘Black Country’ of our Midlands, whereas Gugliomo (William) was a traveller, albeit wealthy due to his mother who was the daughter of the Jameson Irish whisky family and living in the Italian city of *Bolognia* in Italy’s Amelia Romagna in lovely sunshine, with grapes, wine and good food.
Both men had been working on transmission of signals ‘without wires,’ e.g. w.ireless. There is an incontestable date of 12 August 1894 when Oliver demonstrated the Tx and Rx of signals across a room in front of an audience of scientific ‘worthies’ at Oxford University. Nevertheless, young Willie had already demonstrated the transmission of ‘something invisible’ when he (1) formed a circuit with a bell which rang every time there was any lightening flash in his neighbourhood and, (2) found that the sparks from his induction coil would make the same bell work, even if it was the other side of a hill!
Marconi came to England aged 21 to exploit these phenomena and get the financial backing which the Italians would not provide. With his energy and pursuasion he was able to set the Marconi company and several others and with ever expanding success.
OUR Sir Oliver, however, continued his academic work, not a bit like dog-in-a-manger, but very much like Sir Alexander Fleming who was unaware of the import of his accidental discovery in his laboratory of penicillin which had destroyed some of his cultures there! Sir Oliver did, however set up a radio circuit for transmission of signals between the Maldives (Indian Ocean) and Borneo, 800 miles. Guess what! Marconi bought him out!
Sir Oliver was made the first Principal of the new Birmingham University 1900 and awarded the Albert Medal by Queen Victoria and made a Knight.
Success after success came for ’Willie’, including his marriage to an Irish Heiress, who had 70,000 acres and a castle, from which came a daughter and a large motor yacht, both christened Ellitra ** (SPARKLE) **
Sir Oliver reached 89, (Protestant) he had 14 children and died peacefully in his sleep, whereas Marconi, the workaholic, had 3 children, (Catholic) died of coronary thrombosis hurrying to keep an appointment with the Fascist Dictator Mussolini, on 20th July 1937.

“Stop Press: Exciting fresh news from the European Space Agency, the Solar Orbiter (‘SOHO’) has found that the Sun’s core is pulsating at sub-audible frequencies, a study called Helioseismology. These are not audible to us as they ’don’t travel’ across space but they are detected by subtle changes in the light of the sun, these are at the rate of the Ionospheres pulsations and also that of our ’brain waves’?

Poet’s Corner
The Bargain
Jim G0HHQ, A smile poem.
1. 2.
We all look forward, with delight I must be careful this time round.
To the Club Junk sale on Friday night My bargain last time cost me pounds.
Bargains there will be for all, It almost measured six by four.
On loaded tables in the hall I couldn’t get it off the floor.
Perhaps a crystal set or two, I didn’t really quite approve,
And short wave rigs from world war two. It seemed screwed to the floor and
would not move.
3. 4.
I thought I’d bought an ATU, We couldn’t get it in the boot.
That sat in the corner and grew and grew. “It’s got some casters tow tow the brute”.
A power station spare it must have been, We got some rope and made it fast.
Big and black and not too clean I hope the lashing rope will last.
Six members helped me to the car, I’ll use the quiet back roads now,
Luckl’y twas not too far. And should be home within the hour.
5. 6.
What will I do when I arrive? It sat outside for several days,
I’ll leave it sitting on the drive. Obstructing cars moving both ways
An outsize safe that size and shape One morning we looked at the empty patch.
The neighbours with surprise will gape The local villians had made a snatch.
I’ll hire a builder’s van and heavy crane In the silent night the deed was done.
When I bring it back again.
7.
Our valuables, they thought - run
I wonder what it had inside.
The secret entrance had no guide.
I’d like to know but I don’t care.
Goodbye to my power station spare.
Rescued
